The malevolent sommelier…

Giants from Stellenbosch • For a long time, we have spoken about the new wave of wine in South Africa, but one must never forget its classics—the wines that laid the foundation for the wine country South Africa is today. It is easy to be seduced by young winemakers, regions such as Swartland, Elgin, and Hemel-en-Aarde, light red blends and Chenin Blanc from old vines, but let us instead take a closer look at some true giants from Stellenbosch. Here, we are talking about age-worthy, classic red wines with a focus on Cabernet and Bordeaux blends—and a Pinotage, of course!

RUST EN VREDE ESTATE 2022 VS 2006 • With an almost breathtaking history spanning over 300 years, Rust en Vrede in Stellenbosch has established itself as one of the most prominent estates in the entire Cape Province. The beautiful Cape Dutch architecture, still preserved in the estate’s buildings, dates back to the late 18th century and is now classified as national heritage monuments. The modern era at Rust en Vrede began in 1977, when Jannie and Ellen Engelbrecht purchased the property and initiated a restoration that encompassed not only the buildings but also vineyards that had lain fallow for decades. Early on, the focus was placed on Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, and Merlot, and these are also the grapes that form the foundation of the signature wine, Rust en Vrede Estate.

Seppeltsfield Centennial Collection: 1878 – 1926 175th Anniversary 100-Year-Old Tawny • Two premium South Australian producers recently hosted once in a-lifetime vertical tastings at opposite ends of the Barossa. Both spanned decades, generations, and lifetimes. Livets Goda’s Australian correspondent Katie Spain was there to click her heels three times and be transported — via the glass — to another era.

Henschke – 70 Vintages of Mount Edelstone • There’s magic to be found among the gum trees and cool folds of South Australia’s Eden Valley, just east of the Barossa Valley. Close your eyes and you can almost hear the early settlers going about their day; farmers with hands and hopes deep in the soil. Nowadays it is a place known for producers of elegant fine wines, especially Riesling and Shiraz, among them is Henschke, one of Australia’s oldest family-owned wineries.

Henschke 2022 Single Vineyard Collection • The forthcoming release of the Henschke 2022 Single Vineyard Collection sits firmly in the latter category — a reminder that in the Eden Valley, history is measured not in years, but in vines, families and belief.

The Visionary and Guiding Force of Madiran • There are wine regions that live off their history, and then there are those shaped by a visionary. In southwestern France, Alain Brumont is such a figure. When he planted the first vines at Château Montus in 1979, Madiran was barely more than a footnote on France’s wine map. With Montus 1982, a new era began, and with Montus Prestige 1985, Brumont demonstrated that the tannat grape could produce powerful, structured, and long-lived wines – wines that reward patience, and ideally also a well-stocked cellar.
