WINNER OF THE AUREALIS AWARD FOR BEST FANTASY NOVEL 2015

The first book in the Sara Douglass Book Award winning Blackthorn and Grim series.
Embittered healer Blackthorn, wrongly condemned to death, is offered a lifeline by a mysterious stranger. In return, she must set aside her bid for vengeance against the man who destroyed all that she once loved. Not only that: for seven years she must agree to help anyone who asks for her aid. She and her companion Grim settle on the fringes of a mysterious forest in Dalriada, far from the place of their incarceration, and start a new life.
Oran, the crown prince of Dalriada, is waiting for his bride-to-be, Lady Flidais. Her letters and sweet portrait have convinced him that she is his destined true love.
But letters can lie.
To save Oran from disaster, Blackthorn and Grim will need courage, ingenuity, and more than a little magic.
Fans of Marion Zimmer Bradley, Isobelle Carmody and Robin Hobb will love Juliet Marillier.

Marillier (the Sevenwaters Series) opens the Blackthorn & Grim epic fantasy series by sweeping readers into a lavishly detailed world full of enchantments, devotion, heartache, and mystery. Blackthorn, an embittered wise woman, longs for vengeance against the wicked lord responsible for her grievous loss, her imprisonment, and her coming execution. Conmael, a handsome fey nobleman, offers her freedom if she will travel to Dalriada, provide healing help to all who ask, and forsake revenge for seven years. Blackthorn reluctantly accepts, undertaking the journey with her hulking devotee, Grim, who’d shared her captivity. She settles at Winterfalls, home of the humane Prince Oran of Dalriada, and eventually solves a tortuous magical puzzle for him. Marillier’s fascinating narrative, based loosely on Irish myth and centered on women’s empowerment, never slips into sentimentality or untoward sensuality, delivering a tasteful feast for the imagination.

Blackthorn has spent a year imprisoned for no crime of her own; the only thing left in her heart is a thirst to repay the man responsible for her imprisonment. Yet when she is unexpectedly liberated with the help of the fey, the conditions of her release are that she must spend seven vengeance-free years helping anyone who asks it. Even with the aid of Grim, her silent and haunted former cellmate, and the distraction of a mystery involving the new bride of young prince Oran, Blackthorn isn’t certain she can last so long. Dreamer’s Pool is the first book in a new series set in ancient Ireland. Juliet Marillier’s books are always engaging, well-characterised and written with a lot of heart, and this one is no exception. However, Blackthorn and Grim are something of a departure from the young lovers of Marillier’s earlier books. They are in mid-life, and their relationship, at least in this first book, is emotionally fraught and entirely platonic. There is a romance for Prince Oran, but it takes a back seat. Fans of character-driven epic and historical fantasy will certainly enjoy this book, especially if they enjoy reading thoughtful portrayals of mature friendship as a break from the usual romance.
